Banchory St Ternan 5-0 Buckie Rovers
The Saint’s welcomed Buckie to Milton Park today looking to gain revenge after a 1-0 loss in the second game of the season.
Saint’s had a few boys out, Calum Wilson (ankle) Greg Smith (flu) and Conran Wilson. Dean Henderson and Craig Peters were rested after knocks, and Mark Reid missed out due to work commitments.
Banchory changed colours today to play in their new away kit. They opted to play into the wind first half and started well with Steven Travers having an effort just wide and one just over the bar.
Ryan Whelan got on the end of a cross but the ball flew wide. Minutes later he just failed to get on the end of another cross as it zipped across the 6 yard box.
On 20 minutes, Jo Clark appeared to be hacked down by a Buckie defender as he was through on goal and as he fell, couldn’t get a shot away, but the Ref waved the Saint’s claims away.
Salmon was nearly caught off guard on 25 minutes as a Buckie free kick, from deep in their own half was launched forward and the as the wind helped it on, he back peddled and hooked it away for a corner.
Saint’s were playing some great stuff and the opening goal came on 32 minutes as Darren Reid burst down the right and cut it back to the onrushing Jo Clark who slammed it home.
2 minutes later, some more good play down the Saint’s right saw Grant Munro overlap Darren Reid and fizz a cross low and hard across the Buckie 6 yard box for Saint’s skipper Travers to score from 3 yards out.
Grant Munro landed awkwardly on his ankle on 39 minutes and was replaced by Ethan Grant to make his first appearance since the Scottish Cup trip to Ashfield. He was immediately involved, playing the ball out wide to Darren Reid who again cut the ball back and the Saint’s skipper, Steven Travers slid the ball home for his second of the game.
The second half started as the first ended with Saints on the front foot pushing for a fourth goal. They thought they had on 47 minutes as Jo Clark got on the end of a cross only to see his effort come back off the post. Then Darren Reid was through 1 on 1 but the keeper saved his effort.
As the wind grew stronger, Buckie found themselves pinned in their own half. Josh Robertson was next with an effort at the back post which hit the side netting.
The fourth goal arrived when a Liam Cheyne free kick was palmed out to the feet of Darren Reid to score from a few yards.
Adam Reid replaced Jo Clark on 70 minutes and the fifth goal arrived soon after as Liam Cheyne was fouled in the box. The ref pointed to the spot and Steven Travers stepped up to wrap up the points and his third of the day.
Saints kept pushing and Adam Reid nearly added to the tally with a dipping shot just over the bar. Greg Mackie replaced Steven Travers for the final 10 minutes.
The Saint’s gaffer was pleased with his team’s efforts.
The lads were excellent today, a real good team performance. Kept the ball well and took the early chances. It was important we finished the year on a high and make sure we stay right up there with the challengers. I thought we were in complete control from start to finish. Ross has had very little to do other than a great save from a wind assisted free kick. Darren was outstanding today, created plenty chances, 2 assists and got himself on the score sheet, although he should’ve had a couple more. Ethan came back in and did well in his first game since September and the skipper got himself a hat-trick. All in all, a good day for us.
Ross Salmon, Darren Reid, Aaron Thompson, Josh Robertson, Steve Young, Steven Travers (Greg Mackie 80), Grant Munro (Ethan Grant 39), Jo Clark (Adam Reid 70), Ben Ross, Ryan Whelan, Liam Cheyne.
Unused subs. Jason Ritchie, Euan Rose.
Saint’s next game is Fraserburgh Utd at home on the 5th January 2019 in the McBookie.com North Region First Division. ko 1:30
